[DEEP DIVE] SUNSET SHORT
Welcome back to "DEEP DIVE" where we take a look into the inspiration behind some of our favorite Engineered Garments pieces. In this installation, we are featuring the "Sunset Short", a pair of shorts and staple of the Engineered Garments Spring Summer repertoire.
The Sunset Short traces its roots to the traditional rugby short. Also referred to as ‘scrum shorts’ these short-cut bottoms were designed to withstand the strain and wear of high-intensity sport: mud, rain, and numerous tackles, and were typically constructed from cotton. The constraints of the game meant that the shorts were not allowed to be made with embellishments, and most importantly - they were meant to be comfortable.
Engineered Garments designer Daiki Suzuki, aware of the rugby short, wanted to create his own version, keeping the best parts of the original design, while making the garment just a touch dressier - allowing for wear beyond the rugby pitch.
The result is the Sunset Short - named after the Sunset District of San Francisco, just south of Golden Gate Park. An area known for its laid-back surf culture, it was also a favorite spot of Daiki’s during his brief sojourn in the city in the mid 1990’s. These shorts retain certain sporty elements, such as the inside drawstring, and traditional button flap. However, additional length and plentiful tailoring features - pleating on the short front, triangle stitching on the back, and bar stitches galore - mean these shorts are more dressy than casual.
Regarded by many as the companion to Engineered Garments Fatigue Shorts, these shorts are the easy choice for a bite to eat at a chic restaurant, or a night out on the town.
