Founded in 1884 by Charles H. Alden, Alden Shoe Co. carved a niche among numerous Northeastern American shoemakers through its unwavering commitment to quality, craftsmanship, and comfort. With a history spanning nearly 140 years in Massachusetts, Alden has seen several of its designs, like the Leisure Handsewn Loafer, Indy Boot, and Plain Toe Blucher, ascend to American icons.
The chukka epitomizes the 20th century, defying categorization - skirting the line between shoe and boot - and turning military practicality into casual fashion.
British soldiers popularized the design. These simple, two-eyelet, ankle-cut boots were the favorite of Mumbai soldiers who brought them to the Sahara during Britain's WWII Western Desert campaign, placing orders in Cairo's Khan el-Khalili bazaar when old pairs wore out.
In this special edition, Alden reimagines this classic by eliminating laces and eyelets for a sleek, slip-on design. The elastic gore is ingeniously attached not to the vamp but to the side pieces, lying atop the foot to enhance the boot's streamlined look, while maintaining Alden's signature features like the pre-stitch reverse welt and Barrie last construction.
Daiki Suzuki of Engineered Garments introduces unique elements such as a Goodyear wedge sole and a rear pull tab, balancing the formal calfskin upper with a more relaxed aesthetic and perfectly capturing the boot's hybrid spirit.
The Engineered Garments x Alden Chukka Slip-On Boot comes in Black Calfskin, Brown Calfskin, and Tan Suede. The calfskin is sourced from the renowned Horween Leather Co. in Chicago, while the suede is supplied by England's C.F. Stead, treated with a 100% aniline dye and Scotchgard™ for optimal water and stain resistance.
