NEPENTHES NEW YORK PRESENTS : "NO THANK YOU MAN" BY JOHN VETROMILE

"NO THANK YOU MAN"
THE WORK ON DISPLAY IS INSPIRED BY THE CURRENT GENERATION OF PHOTOGRAPHERS IN LES WHO REPRESENT SKATEBOARDING AND SKATE ADJACENT SUBCULTURES WITH FRESH EYES AND THEMES. I WANTED MYSELF AND MY FRIEND WHOM I SKATE WITH TO PARTICIPATE IN THAT DISCOURSE.
IT IS CURRENTLY A WONDERFUL TIME TO TAKE STILL IMAGES OF SKATEBOARDING. MOST MOMENTS ARE RECORDED ON VIDEO AND THERE IS ALMOST NO RELIANCE ON STILL PHOTOGRAPHY FOR DOCUMENTING TRICKS. THE INCIDENT FREES SKATE PHOTOGRAPHY FROM THE DEPICTIVE CONVENTIONS WHICH IT HAS TYPICALLY FOLLOWED - I.E. OF SHOWING THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN SPOT, SKATER, AND TRICK.
THIS BEING THE CASE, MY WORK IS LESS CONCERNED ABOUT SHOWING THE SKATE SPOT AND SOMETIMES EVEN A CLEAR VIEW OF THE TRICK BEING PERFORMED. INSTEAD IT IS MORE CONCERNED WITH ELICITING AN EMOTIONAL RESPONSE FROM THE VIEWER THROUGH ANGLES THAT ACCENTUATE THE DISTINCT PARCEL OF TIME WHERE THE SKATERS' FACIAL EXPRESSIONS, CONTORTIONS, AND SINEWING MUSCLES ARE AT THEIR PEAK OF DRAMA.
