Avventure & Pantano by Vernacolo

What if craftsmen known for making authentic trekking shoes and rugged work boots turned their expertise toward contemporary footwear for everyday wear?

Born from this idea and a desire to showcase Tuscany’s centuries-old tradition of vegetable-tanned leather, Vernacolo brings together traditional Italian craftsmanship and a modern approach to footwear design.

Each pair is handcrafted by a small, family-run workshop in Tuscany, Italy, specializing in hunting shoes and work boots. Personally discovered by the designer, the workshop is among the few remaining manufacturers dedicated to traditional, hands-on shoemaking techniques.

At the heart of Vernacolo is Tuscan Vacchetta leather, a material rooted in more than 400 years of leatherworking tradition. Tanned using natural vegetable tannins, this durable leather has historically been used for fine furniture and equestrian equipment. When used in footwear, it gradually softens and conforms to the wearer’s feet, developing a rich patina and unique character over time.

Vernacolo employs traditional constructions such as Ideal Montagna stitchdown and Norwegian stitching, techniques developed for demanding outdoor environments. Combined with Vibram outsoles, these methods provide durability, stability, and practical protection against the elements.

Balancing the rugged character of classic work boots and hunting footwear with a refined, contemporary aesthetic, Vernacolo creates shoes that feel both familiar and unexpected.

In an era increasingly dominated by mass production, Vernacolo represents a commitment to traditional craftsmanship, exceptional materials, and footwear designed to be worn, cared for, and appreciated for years to come.

Avventure – A Contemporary Interpretation of the Classic Moccasin Boot

The Avventure reimagines the traditional moccasin boot through a modern perspective, combining rugged outdoor heritage with a refined silhouette suited to everyday wear.

Developed using an original last, the design strikes a balance between the substantial character of classic work boots and the understated elegance of contemporary footwear.

The name Avventure draws inspiration from the Italian words avventura, meaning “adventure,” and avventuriero, referring to an adventurer or someone seeking new experiences and opportunities.

Handcrafted in Tuscany, the Avventure features traditional Ideal Montagna stitchdown construction, a technique commonly associated with mountain footwear, offering durability and stability.

The upper is crafted from premium Tuscan Vacchetta leather, vegetable-tanned using traditional methods. Known for its strength and distinctive aging characteristics, the leather gradually develops deeper tones, a richer sheen, and a patina unique to each wearer.

Underfoot, a Vibram Morflex Christy outsole provides lightweight cushioning and comfort while maintaining the dependable feel of traditional work footwear.

Combining time-honored Italian craftsmanship with everyday versatility, the Avventure is designed to accompany its wearer from city streets to new destinations.

Pantano – Traditional Craftsmanship Meets the Modern Camp Moc

Inspired by classic camp moccasins, the Pantano combines traditional moccasin detailing with the rugged construction of heritage work boots.

Its distinctive U-shaped moc toe stitching gives the shoe a familiar character, while subtle adjustments to the original last create a slightly lower instep and a cleaner, more refined silhouette.

What sets the Pantano apart is its construction. Rather than using the lightweight methods typically associated with camp moccasins, Vernacolo employs the robust Ideal Montagna stitchdown construction traditionally found in mountain and work footwear.

This unexpected combination creates a distinctive balance of durability, structure, and casual sophistication.

The leather version is crafted from traditional Tuscan Vacchetta leather, celebrated for its durability and beautiful natural aging process. With continued wear, the leather develops a rich patina, gradually taking on a character unique to its owner.

Suede versions are also available in a selection of colors. Slightly thicker than conventional suede, the carefully selected material is designed to maintain its shape and structure through extended wear.

The Pantano is offered with two Vibram outsole options: the rugged Ripple sole and the classic Cristy sole, both providing durability and cushioning for everyday comfort.

With its distinctive construction, quality materials, and thoughtful proportions, the Pantano offers a fresh interpretation of the timeless camp moccasin.
